Which venomous snakes live in your part of the country?
The United States has four venomous groups, and NIOSH maps them cleanly: rattlesnakes over most of the country, copperheads through the eastern states and west into Texas, cottonmouths in the Southeast wherever there is standing water, and coral snakes along the southern edge from Florida to Arizona. Stack those ranges and the Southeast comes out heaviest. Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina each have six venomous species, and Georgia has seven. Homeowners there can meet an eastern diamondback in a pine flatwood, a pygmy rattlesnake in a flowerbed, a cottonmouth by the retention pond, and a coral snake under leaf litter. The mid-Atlantic and Texas share the copperhead as the main residential threat. The Northeast and Midwest are the calmest: timber rattlesnakes and copperheads exist but stick to rocky ridges. The West is rattlesnake-only, from the sidewinder in desert sand to the western rattlesnake in Pacific Northwest hills. Knowing which applies to you decides how urgent the call is.
Why snakes come to houses, and what rodents have to do with it
A snake at your door is almost always following food. Rat snakes, racers, kingsnakes, and every rattlesnake and copperhead eat rodents, and a house with mice in the garage is a buffet with a roof. That is why UC IPM's rattlesnake guidance spends as much space on rodent burrows and brush removal as on the snakes themselves. Cover is the second draw. Woodpiles, stacked pavers, tarps on the ground, and dense groundcover give a snake shade in summer and shelter in spring. Concrete slabs give it warmth on cool mornings. A yard with all of these beside a foundation crack is set up for a resident snake. The third draw is seasonal. In continental climates, snakes hunt for winter dens from September into October, and a warm foundation with a gap is a candidate. In subtropical zones there is no den season, just a year-round search for shade, water, and prey. The fix is the same everywhere: remove the rodents, clear the cover, close the gap.
What does a licensed snake removal look like?
Removal is hands-on work, not a treatment. The operator arrives with tongs, a hook, and a lidded bucket, confirms the species from a safe distance, and either lifts the snake directly or coaxes it into the bucket. Most releases happen on site or a short distance away, because state wildlife agencies want native snakes kept in their home range. Protected species change the rules. Georgia lists its nonvenomous snakes as protected, Virginia protects the timber rattlesnake, and California forbids killing the red diamond rattlesnake while allowing a two-snake take on others on private land. New York requires a nuisance wildlife control license for the operator. A good provider knows these rules and will say what they can and cannot do. After the snake is out, the visit is not done. The operator should walk the foundation with you, point out gaps over a quarter inch, note rodent sign, and give you a written scope for exclusion. If they leave with only the snake, you paid for half a job.
How the calendar changes by climate zone
Warm-climate homeowners never get a true off-season. In tropical and subtropical zones, snakes are active every month, with the busiest periods in spring when they emerge to feed and mate, and again in fall. Desert rattlesnakes in Arizona and southern California add a twist: in the hottest weeks they switch to night, which is when people step near them by porch lights. Temperate and continental zones run a shorter, sharper season. Snakes leave dens in April, feed hard through summer, and by September begin looking for a winter refuge. That fall search is when snakes turn up in basements and crawlspaces in the Northeast, Midwest, and mountain West, because a warm foundation with a crack looks like a den. For scheduling, this means two things. In warm regions, exclusion work can happen any month and should not wait. In cold regions, the best time to seal is late summer, before the den search starts, and the second-best time is now.
What is the real risk from a bite, and who gets bitten?
NIOSH counts 7,000 to 8,000 venomous snakebites a year in the United States and about five deaths. That ratio says bites are common enough to take seriously, and with hospital care they are very survivable. The lasting harm is to hands: NIOSH reports 10 to 44 percent of rattlesnake bite survivors have permanent injury such as finger loss, which is why rattlesnake calls get priority from removal companies. UC IPM puts rattlesnake bites specifically at about 1,000 a year with typically fewer than four deaths. Copperheads account for far more bites but far less severe outcomes. Who gets bitten is the useful part. Most bites land on people who chose to interact with the snake: reaching into a woodpile, swinging a shovel at it, or picking up a dead one. UC IPM warns that a dead rattlesnake can bite by reflex an hour or more later. Keep your hands out of it and let someone with tongs handle the animal.
