Which snakes you are actually likely to meet
The odds are strongly in your favor before anyone even looks at the photograph. New Mexico State University Extension counts 46 snake species in New Mexico, and only eight of them are venomous: seven rattlesnakes and the western coral snake. Thirty eight species are harmless, and the bullsnakes, gophersnakes, kingsnakes and garter snakes on that list are the ones that use irrigated city lots because that is where the mice are. Of the venomous eight, one dominates the conversation. Extension calls the western diamondback the most frequently sighted rattlesnake in the state and the largest, occurring across flat plains, rocky canyons, grassland desert and up into pine and oak forest. Prairie, rock, Mojave, black-tailed and ridgenose rattlesnakes and the massasauga fill out the group, with ranges that vary considerably across New Mexico. The coral snake can be set aside in Albuquerque. Its range covers only extreme southwestern Catron County and the western parts of Hidalgo and Grant counties, hundreds of miles from here. A banded red, black and light snake in a city yard is far more likely to be a harmless lookalike, and a photograph settles it in minutes without anyone getting close.
Why chemistry has nothing to offer here
People expect snake work to look like insect work, and it does not. A pesticide reaches an insect through grooming, feeding or contact with a treated surface across a small territory. A snake crosses a property quickly, eats live prey it catches itself, and touches almost nothing you could treat, so there is no route in. The state extension position is unusually direct. No fumigants or poisons are registered for snake control in New Mexico, and habitat modification and exclusion are described as the only effective measures. That is not a gap waiting to be filled by a better product; it is a statement about what the animal is. That leaves the shopping list short and physical. Quarter inch hardware cloth, gate sweeps, a garage door seal that meets the slab, sealant at cooler lines and hose bibs, a rack for the firewood, and traps for the rodents. UC IPM does not list repellent granules or vibrating stakes among measures that work, and in a climate delivering 9 inches of rain a year the granular products are mostly an expensive way to change the color of your gravel.
A month by month plan for a high desert yard
Each part of this work has a right season here, and temperature sets the schedule rather than convenience. April and May bring the first calls. Animals leaving winter shelter move slowly and bask in the open on cool days, and people are outside turning over pots and stacked material that has sat untouched since October. This is the stretch for identification and for getting a scope written, not for finishing repairs, because traffic patterns are still showing themselves. June through August is the working window. With highs near 92F, snakes retreat into shade at midday and move at dawn and dusk, so daytime is comparatively safe for sealing gates, screening penetrations and pulling apart rock piles. Finish the exclusion in this stretch. September and October are the deadline. Cooling nights start animals looking for insulated shelter, and a gap under a garage door that nobody minded in June becomes an invitation. Sealing this late carries a real risk of closing something inside. November through March is quiet at 26F winter lows, which makes it the season for the heavy yard work: clearing wall bases, moving woodpiles, and thinning ground cover ready for spring.
What a competent first visit looks like
You can tell a thorough visit from a thin one within the first ten minutes, and it is worth knowing what to watch for. It opens with questions rather than equipment. Where exactly was the animal, at what time, roughly how long, what was it doing, and which direction did it go. Those answers narrow the search before anyone walks the lot, and a technician who skips them is starting from nothing. The search itself is done with a hook and a container, at a distance, because the species decides the handling. A harmless colubrid goes into a bin quickly. Anything that rattles gets tongs, more clearance, and everyone else indoors while it happens. What separates a real visit from a callout comes after the animal is in the container. Expect a walk of the whole perimeter with specific openings named out loud: the gate bottoms, the garage door line, cooler line penetrations, the joint where the block wall meets the slab, and each outbuilding in turn. Expect questions about mice, packrats, birdseed storage and where the irrigation runs. A visit that captures an animal and never mentions openings or rodents has sold you roughly a third of the job.
Water, gravel and the two things that pull snakes in
In a city receiving 9 inches of rain a year, everything living on your lot is there because of something you are doing, and that is genuinely good news, because it means the situation responds to changes you control. Water comes first. A dripping hose bib, a cracked emitter, a shaded bed watered on a timer nobody has adjusted since spring, or a swamp cooler overflow all create the only damp ground for some distance. Insects arrive, then lizards and mice, then whatever eats them. Fixing the leak does more for snake pressure than any product on a shelf. Cover comes second, and Albuquerque yards are full of it by design. Decorative rock, flagstone stacks, gravel over weed fabric, block wall footings and raised planters all provide exactly the tight, shaded, temperature stable spaces that UC IPM names among the features to remove: brush, rock piles and rodent burrows. The practical version is not a bare lot. Keep the first few feet around doors, patios and play areas open and simple, and push the interesting cover to the far corners where nobody walks barefoot at dusk.
