Household snake calls across the country are dominated by a small set of harmless species: rat snakes, garter snakes and racers. In a wet, mild climate the small ground hunting species tend to be the ones people meet, because that is what the habitat supports. These animals make their living on exactly the things a Portland gardener complains about. Slugs, worms, amphibians and young rodents are all on the menu depending on species and size, and a snake working a bed is doing unpaid pest control at a rate no product matches. A season without a midsummer break
Snake activity here follows an April to October pattern, but the shape inside that window differs from hotter parts of the country in one important way. Spring is the obvious start. As soil warms and the rain eases, snakes emerge and begin hunting the amphibians and invertebrates that are abundant in a wet climate. Early sightings often happen on warm hard surfaces, since a cool bodied animal will use a stone step or a paved edge to raise its temperature. Summer is where the difference shows. With averages near 81F, midsummer here never gets hot enough to force snakes into night activity. They stay diurnal, so sightings continue at ordinary times of day all season, and residents notice them far more than people in climates where the animals disappear into the dark for three months. Autumn brings the shelter search. As nights slide toward the 36F winter low, snakes look for somewhere frost free, and an unscreened crawl space vent is a serious candidate. That makes late summer the deadline for sealing work rather than the start of it. By December most activity has stopped, though a mild sunny afternoon can still produce a sighting.
Compost, cover and the wet ground problem
In a city where 43 inches of rain a year keeps everything green, the yard features that attract snakes are the same ones a conscientious gardener builds on purpose. Compost is the clearest example. An open heap is warm, damp and full of invertebrates, which draws rodents, which draws snakes. A closed bin keeps the composting and loses the wildlife corridor. Sheet mulch and heavy leaf mould do something similar at ground level. Stored material is the second issue. Boards, pallets, stacked pots, unused pavers and lumber left directly on soil create a stable humid space underneath that is ideal shelter. Racking that material a few inches off the ground removes the void entirely. Ground cover is the third. Dense low planting running up to a foundation gives an animal a covered route from the garden to the building, and it hides the openings you would otherwise notice. Cutting back a foot of bare soil along the wall makes both the route and the gaps visible. None of this requires giving up a productive garden. It requires keeping the damp habitat out at the beds and away from the wall, which is a small adjustment with a large effect.
Sealing a house in a rainy climate
Exclusion is the durable half of snake control, and a wet climate adds a wrinkle: the openings keep reappearing. Start with the crawl space, since it is the most common indoor destination in this housing stock. Vents should carry quarter inch galvanized mesh, the standard UC IPM sets for exclusion, and the access door should latch properly against a solid frame. Warped hatches are the single most common finding on a Portland inspection. Work outward from there: hose bib penetrations, gas and electrical entries, the joint where a deck ledger meets siding, and the bottom corners of a garage door. Any of those can exceed a quarter inch without looking like a hole. The rain is what makes this a maintenance item rather than a project. Repeated saturation moves soil against the foundation, rots untreated wood at the base of a skirt and pulls sealant away from masonry, so gaps that were closed two winters ago can be open again. A spring walk with a flashlight held flat against the wall shows openings that a straight on look misses. Ask for the sealed locations in writing so that annual check takes minutes rather than a full survey.
