What a 67F summer does to snake behavior
In most of the country the summer story is snakes avoiding heat. Here it runs the other way. With summer highs averaging 67F and winter lows near 46F, San Francisco offers a narrow band of mild temperatures rather than extremes, and a cold-blooded animal in that setting spends its time collecting warmth rather than dodging it. That single fact predicts where you will meet one. Look at south-facing walls in the afternoon, concrete steps and paths that have held sun, retaining walls that store heat into the evening, corrugated metal and dark plastic sheeting on the ground, and the sunny flank of a compost bin. Those places are warmer than the surrounding air, and they are exactly where a snake will be lying. It also predicts the calendar. The active window in this coastal zone runs roughly April through October, but the edges are soft, because there is no hard freeze to shut anything down and no punishing heat to drive activity into the night. Practically, that means the useful habit is not seasonal vigilance but a two second look before you reach under a sun-warmed board, move a pot that has sat all summer, or put a hand into a wall gap you cannot see into.
Rattlesnakes are the only venomous snakes California has
This is the single most calming fact available to anyone in the state, and it deserves to be stated plainly. UC IPM says rattlesnakes are the only venomous snakes in California, and counts nine species statewide, occurring across terrain from below sea level to roughly 11,000 feet. There is no coral snake, cottonmouth or copperhead question to answer here. That narrows identification to one judgment: is this a rattlesnake or not. A rattlesnake is heavy through the body, moves deliberately rather than fluidly, and has a blunt tail that carries either a rattle or, in a young animal, a single button. A long, slender, fast snake that pours itself into a hedge before you can focus is essentially never one. Several traps remain. Size is not an indicator, because young rattlesnakes are fully venomous. Head shape is unreliable, since frightened harmless snakes flatten their heads on purpose. And a rattlesnake that does not rattle is common, particularly if it thinks stillness is working. The safe procedure is the same regardless: back away, photograph the body from several feet with the zoom, and send the picture to someone qualified before deciding whether anything needs to happen at all.
What California rules allow on your own property
The legal picture in California is less restrictive than in many states, and knowing it prevents both overreaction and expensive mistakes. UC IPM notes that no license is needed for most species on private land, with a two-snake bag limit, and that the red diamond rattlesnake may not be taken or killed under any circumstances. That last clause is the one that catches people, because it makes a misidentification into a legal problem as well as a physical one. If you cannot name the species with certainty, the permission to act is not much use to you. There is a second rule worth knowing that is about safety rather than law. UC IPM warns that a dead rattlesnake can deliver a reflex bite an hour or more after death, and advises handling dead snakes with tools. That means a shovel or tongs, a bag, and no bare hands, ever, regardless of how obviously finished the animal looks. Put together, the sensible reading is that legality is not the deciding factor. The reason to leave a snake alone and call a licensed operator is that the attempt to handle one is where the injuries come from, not that the law forbids it.
Where snakes get into dense city buildings
The quarter inch tolerance UC IPM uses for exclusion turns a vague worry into a checklist you can actually walk. Anything a pencil fits into counts, and the same measurement applies to rats, which is convenient because the two problems share a single fix. On a San Francisco building the ground floor does most of the work. Garage door bottom seals flatten and tear over years and leave a continuous slot along the floor line, usually worst at the corners. Air and crawl vents at grade are often screened with insect mesh that has rusted or been pushed out. Basement and utility doors sit above worn thresholds. Utility, gas and plumbing penetrations leave rings of gap that nobody sealed when the line was run. Then there are the features specific to older, tightly packed housing. Light wells collect leaf litter and stay damp. Shared side passages between buildings are narrow, shaded, and rarely inspected. Stairs over a void give cover at ground level. Fix these with hardware cloth stretched across whole openings rather than patches, sealant around penetrations, and door hardware that closes properly. It is unglamorous work and it is the only part that functions when nobody is home.
The rodent link, and why it is the real subject
A snake in an urban yard is a symptom, and the underlying condition is almost always rodents. Snakes do not eat garbage, plants, or pet food. They eat rats, mice, voles, lizards and frogs, and they go where those are concentrated. That reframes the whole problem in a useful way. If you have had a snake in the garage, the more important finding is that the garage was worth hunting in. Stored birdseed, open bags of pet food, cardboard nesting material and undisturbed clutter build a rodent population, and a rodent population eventually attracts something that eats rodents. It also explains why removal alone disappoints people. Take the snake away and the buffet remains, so another animal finds the same conditions within weeks. Take the rodents away and the property stops being interesting on its own. UC IPM's habitat advice points at the same target from a different angle: remove brush, rock piles and rodent burrows. In a small city lot the equivalent items are ivy at wall bases, sheet material lying on soil, stacked pots and lumber, and open compost. Clearing those does double duty, because it removes both the rodent shelter and the snake shelter in one pass.
