Every other pest on a property has a chemical answer of some kind, which is why the absence of one for snakes surprises people. The reason is biology. Insecticides and rodenticides reach an animal through grooming, feeding, or absorption through the feet and body. Snakes do not groom, do not take bait, and their scales do not pick up residual product the way an insect's cuticle does. There is nothing for a treatment to grip. That leaves three levers, and they are all physical. Take the animal away, take the entrance away, take the food away. A licensed operator handles the first with a hook and a container. Identification is the whole game, and it should happen through a camera from several feet away rather than by eye at arm's length. Photograph the body from above and along the length. Head shape is the cue everyone repeats and the one worth trusting least, because harmless snakes flatten their heads into a broad triangle on purpose when they are frightened. In California the question is narrower than in most states, which helps. Rattlesnakes are the only venomous snakes here, so you are looking for a heavy bodied snake with a blunt tail carrying a rattle or a single button, moving deliberately rather than fast. A long, slender, quick snake that pours itself into cover is almost certainly a harmless species doing you a favor. A few practical rules cover the rest. Never use a color rhyme as your only test. Do not judge by size, since young rattlesnakes are venomous. Do not approach to get a better picture; zoom instead. And if the animal is coiled and buzzing, stop moving toward it, back straight out the way you came, and call someone. Every one of those rules exists because someone ignored it.
How to compare two snake quotes that look nothing alike
Snake proposals are harder to compare than most pest quotes, because companies scope them three different ways. One prices the capture alone. Another bundles capture with a sealing package. A third leads with a rodent agreement and treats the snake as incidental to it. Put side by side, they look like quotes for different jobs, because they are. Split each one into three lines yourself. Capture: what is included, what happens if the animal has moved on before arrival, and whether a rattlesnake call costs more. Rodents: is it included, is it an add-on, or is it silent. Then ask two questions that separate serious bids from thin ones. Ask for the exclusion scope in writing with the openings listed. Ask what happens if a snake is seen again in six weeks, and whether that return visit is covered.
